Silk shantung and lace corset

Here's the result of that post A while back asking your opinions on color-schemes - It turned out much better than I hoped! It's very sturdy and (too) thick with 1 lining, 2 core, and the silk and lace outer layers (not to mention twill-backed channels!)  It was very hard to sew through all the layers using my dinky little Kenmore (R.I.P.) and I made the boning channels too small for the 3/8" boning. I had to go and buy some 1/4" spiral retail when I have a whole roll of 3/8" sitting next to me (d'oh)!

It has a 16" busk - I think someone asked about those earlier - and a bunch of detachable goodies: 6 detachable suspenders, a garter, and 2 bows which can attach to the front of the corset or the tabs of the front 2 suspenders. I went a little crazy with the grommets - 48 total! I was going for a different look and I definitely like the way it turned out, but it takes a loooong time to lace up!

This is the first corset I've made for myself in quite a while - I thought I'd photoshop it and spare you the half-crossdressed photos :D  This, as well as all the other ones, looks a little low-waisted and I try to draft that out, but I can't fine-tune it anymore.  I can't draft the waist any higher and still breathe, and the bottom line is at its limit if I want to sit down.  Some other time I may try a full Eduardian style over the hips and see if that works... No biggie though, it just comes with the territory of being 6' 5" tall, and it doesn't happen on the underbusts.  I hope you like it :)

how cute! I love the colours and the accessories, the little bows are so sweet! The elastic on the suspenders is really awesome. Is there any reason why people only use one garter?

Thanks! I don't know why only 1 garter. I'm not sure they have any real purpose at all - except to throw to the bachelors at weddings :)

That's lovely, the blue lace really works there. The back is amazing too (lots of lace-up!!). I don't think it looks too low waisted, actually very natural. Wonderful job, and the tons of lovely little extras just make it so perfect.

I second the garter love too...now I want to make one (or two!) for myself. The bow is just too cute.

Thanks - I think I need to play with the coloring on PS. It should be more on the green side. Looking at it now it does look pretty blue :)

Oh how lovely! I like the blue lace on the pink silk and I especially like how you used the lace edge for the back. And the bows are too cute. All that lacing may take forever to thread, but it looks great and works well for fine control on how and where you want things tightened.

thank you. I had to get creative with that back part for the lace. Denver Fabrics didn't have much of it so I had to get creative. Fortunately I hardly ever throw away scraps!

That is SO gorgeous. I love it. The construction looks so clean and amazing.

Thanks! This technique is working out so much better than the sandwich method - and it's a lot less frustrating too ;)

Thank you! I was so afraid of it being too loud the whole time I was working on it

It is beautiful, and beautiful work.

Shantung is interesting, it has all the shine of satin but doesn't have the nylon/whatever backing.

thank you. It is a weird fabric, definitely one of my favorites. It's not such a slippery pain like satin and it's easy to tear too when finding the grain. The slugs also give a cool texture I think

Gorgeous, very gorgeous. That's an amazing color combo!

I am completely in love with this corset. The shape is amazing!

I don't even *like* pink, and I would still wear this beautiful piece :)
_luminosity_ on February 12th, 2006 01:03 am (UTC)
thanks - I actually have to remember that it's pink sometimes. Usually I work with the Barbie doll-ish pinks and that's the color that comes to mind when I think of it. This has a purple crossthreading to it too. Another reason to like shantung ;)

Thank you - it's definitely the most frilly corset I've ever made :D

That shape, it's so elegant and sensual. Bust shaping looks *fabalous*. The color combination is stunning as well. I think I'm drooling along with everyone else on the thread. :D

lol, thank you very much
